5 Tips to Soothe a Fussy Baby

"Babies get fussy, it's just what they do!"

Is this a familiar refrain you've heard from well-meaning 'helpers'?

The truth is, yes, they do get fussy, but there is usually a solid reason behind it. So, how do you help them along in their fussy periods? Give this list a try.

1. Run the checklist

Is baby dry? Is baby fed? Is baby rested? Many babies remain content if they have a clean diaper, a full tummy and are well rested. Run this checklist first to see if there is simple fix like a change, snack or nap.

2. Swaddle

There are  many benefits to swaddling, especially in the first few months. Swaddling mimics the womb and can be a great way to soothe baby in those early months when they are still adjusting to the outside world. It can also alleviate colic symptoms and help baby regulate body temperature.

3. Ssshh and Sway

Hold baby close, cheek-to-cheek or chest-to-chest and make a 'ssshhh' sound. Sway or move up and down slowly at the same time. The sound and motion may be just the ticket for soothing your little one.

4. Wear your Baby

Being close to mom or dad's heartbeat is a great way to soothe a fussy baby. Add in the 'ssshh' and sway and you'll have a content baby in no time.

5. Quiet their surroundings

Too much stimulation might make for a cranky baby.

If you're out and about, try putting them in their car seat or stroller and pulling the shade in front of them. You may not be able to quiet the noise, but you can try to remove all the moving things and surroundings in front of them.

If you had baby facing out in their carrier, switch to the hug position and encourage them to snuggle up.

There are no guarantees, but with a few additional tools in your toolbox, you'll find a way to soothe your little one as they learn to navigate the big new world around them. If all your efforts aren't working, speak with your pediatrician to troubleshoot further.
